Hi, everyone! Please allow me to introduce myself – my name is Marty Witt and I am the current chair of the Academic Law Libraries New Law Librarians (ALL-NEW) Committee. Over the next few months, the ALL-SIS “What’s New” blog will be hosting guest blog posts by different members of the ALL-NEW committee. I’m kicking it off this month with a post that I hope will be useful to a wide range of law librarians and professionals, including those newer to the field. It’s the end of February, so it’s the time of year when plans begin to form for the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) annual meeting. This year, the meeting is going to be held in Austin, TX from July 15 – 18. Registration is already open and early registration discounts are available through June 2.
One of the most common challenges faced by AALL members of all types is how professional development and conference attendance be supported/funded. Some institutions will cover only a portion of the cost of attendance, while others may leave the funding completely up to the individual. The conference registration ($599 early bird), hotel ($208/night for the HQ hotel), flight (~$300 right now from NY, but varies greatly), plus other expenses all tend to add up quickly. Fortunately, there are a variety of grants available, from the parent AALL organization, from Special Interest Sections, from regional law library associations, and other organizations. A listing of grant opportunities appears below, and I strongly encourage you to apply for any that you could possibly qualify for. Continue reading
